Itinerary
DAY 1:
We leave La Paz, passing through El Alto until we reach the highway that goes towards Oruro (modern highway). We drive for a few hours and then turn onto the road that goes to the border with Chile. On the way, we will stop at Curahuara de Carangas (for approximately 3 hours) where we will visit a chapel known as the “Sistine Chapel of the Altiplano”. After our visit, we will continue a little longer before stopping for our lunch and taking a break from the trip. We will take a walk from the town to explore the local area, and you will have free time to walk around the town and see the local colonial era church. We spend the night in the town of Sajama in our local accommodation.
DAY 2:
This morning we will travel toward a lake called Laguna Huayña Khota, located at the base of the Cordillera Occidental. In this place, we can often see Andean wildlife in the back part of the wonderful Andean landscape. This morning we will also hike to one of the Sajama mountain base camps. Climbing up to (5,000 m.a.s.l. 16404 ft.) meters, this hike will be a bit strenuous for some, but there will be time and you won’t be pushed too hard.
In the afternoon, after our active morning, we will welcome the opportunity to rest in the natural hot springs that offer a magnificent view of Sajama Mountain. After this recovery soak, we will return to the village for dinner and spend the night there again.
DAY 3:
After breakfast we will explore more of the natural beauty of the Sajama National Park, first visiting the geyser field just a few minutes drive from the city. This is a wonder of nature and, since we are off the beaten path, we are likely to have the place to ourselves. We continue to the Macaya tombs, colorfully painted funerary towers where we will learn about its history. Unfortunately, we have to start our journey back to La Paz and leave this wonderful area and from here we begin the 5-hour journey back to the city arriving between 5:00 pm and 8:00 pm (depending on how early we leave and the traffic in El Alto).
